Hi, Jasmin! Congrats on your role in the TNT drama series Will. Tell us about your character Emilia Bassanno. ———

Hi! Thank you!! Emilia Bassano was a real person, who happened to be alive during William Shakespeare’s time and changed the course of history for women, with little recognition. She was the first female English poet who penned and published poetry under her own name. When we meet Emilia in the series, we know nothing about her except that she is beautiful, foreign and comes from money. As the show progresses, we learn of her commitment to art and her passion for love.
Did you have to audition for the role?

I did. I auditioned and had a callback in Los Angeles.

The series is a modern spin on Shakespeare’s life. Have you starred in any traditional Shakespearean plays?

I’ve done excerpts from ‘As You Like It‘, ‘Macbeth‘ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘ throughout various seasons of my training, but I have yet to tackle a full fledged production of a Shakespeare play. That is on my list!

The series was shot in Wales. Tell us about shooting in a location rich with history.

Anytime I travel I am easily blown away by the history. Our country is SO YOUNG comparatively! Some castles around the U.K. have been standing for over a thousand years. It’s almost hard to fathom. Shooting in these locations adds a powerful layer to the atmosphere, and therefore the characters and the story as a whole. Sometimes you can feel the presence of the people who lived there hundreds of years before and informs the way you exist and move about in the spaces. It’s mysterious and wonderful.

You were recently in the final season of HBO’s drama series The Leftovers. Tell us about your role.

I played Evie Murphy, a teen girl who was confident, active and a dynamic member of her family and community when we first met her in season two. As the season progresses though, she transforms into the key antagonist in her community and the catalyst that tears her family apart. By season three, she is a completely new person and the audience is never sure what form she will take.

Between auditioning and filming, what do you do in your spare time?

I am currently making my way through the Thug Kitchen cookbook! My girlfriend and I want to minimize our waste and better our health, so we’re actively making an effort to cook at home instead of eating out. I am also working on my first album right now, and trying to get in shape!

Thus far, what has been the best experience working in the industry?

The Leftovers. Shooting the series not only gave me an exceptional role to dive into, it introduced me to my girlfriend, allowed me to fall in love with Austin and the people that live there. It also gave me a best friend, Violett Beane, a support system and a family of friends and mentors to guide me in my career, and took me around the world. It was a dream come true in every sense of the word.

Do you have any upcoming projects that we haven’t mentioned?

I do! You can look for me on season three of Love on Netflix early 2018. And everything else is under wraps for now.

Complete this sentence, if I had an opportunity to do anything I want, I would  ___________.

Artistically, I would originate a role on Broadway. Personally, I would open a non-profit that allows survivors of child abuse to heal with horse therapy for free. Romantically, I would travel the world with nothing but my love, our dog, and a backpack.
