David Gutierrez (Gonzalo Trigueros) is an up and coming New York comedian who commands an audience. However, off-stage he struggles and is in dire straits. The death of his sister Gabriella, his mother Mariah in a mental institution, and the disappearance of his abusive father Ralph magnify his challenges. His only support comes from his street smart friend Rob Parker, played by Jacques Point Du Jour. As things worsen for Maria in hospital and unforeseen tensions develop with Rob, David flees to Los Angeles to hone his craft and leave his past behind. However, a life-changing phone call forces his return to New York and his past catches up with him.
In all, the performances are sound, convincing and draw you in. Director and writer Oliver Mann does well to balance humor and comedy with a sombre multi-character drama that addresses solemn issues such as mental health, child abuse, and domestic violence. The film undoubtedly attempts to include all the components of a good drama, particularly character development. The story is tense and gritty, and the supporting cast all deliver a competent and memorable performance but the movie lands just off target, due to what appears to be a rushed finale and a feeling half a film was made. David’s arrival back in New York could have provided more drama and twists to an already intriguing plot. Such a Funny Life is by no means a bad film but it is a movie where a stimulating storyline and interesting characters aren’t fully served by the final product.
‘Such a Funny Life’ gets its theatrical release November 8.
