BilionAir Carter is a versatile rapper with a unique sound. Delivering a flow honed through his unique experiences, this Los Angeles based artist is a star on the rise. Born in Culver City and raised in South Central, Los Angeles, Carter learned at a very young age the power of working hard. Using the cultural influences of his city to perfect his vibe, he attributes LA’s diverse communities to his style as an individual and as an artist. BilionAir Carter teamed up with Canadian DJ and producer  KYNGS to produce his new single “2Real“. We had the pleasure of speaking to him.

BilionAir Carter, Thank you for granting the interview. Congratulations on your latest track. It underpins a philosophy; no matter what mistakes we make in life we can only learn from them. What inspired you to produce this track?

The beat was produced after Adam Spira of Ashton Adams Music listened to a Bryson Tiller and Young Thug track. Adam said I would sound dope on that type of production, so the following day Kyngs went in the studio and cooked the beat up. 2REAL became the song title because at the end of the song I basically created a pre-hook saying “how I’ve been 2-2REAL”. Therefore that sparked the idea for me to name the song “2REAL”.

To date, what has been the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist?

The biggest challenge up to date has been the lack of ROI which means “Return of Investment”. I have invested thousands of dollars into my music from studio equipment to traveling all the way to Canada just to make music. And I would turn around and do it all over again because if you don’t bet on yourself who will? Also, who wants to see someone not put their all into themselves and expect someone to invest in them. I know it’s all going to come back times a billion. And with me already learning from my first couple singles I know where I can really flourish from my trial & error. You can’t learn without failing; I embrace the failure process because I learn from my mistakes that’s why it’s Only one L in my artist name. Meaning I don’t believe in taking two L’s it’s the lesson learned and that’s it.

You grew up in LA where Ben Caldwell, a local Leimert Park legend is said to have influenced your career. Please tell our readers how much of an impact he had on you?

Ben Caldwell is an independent African American man who has owned a business since before I was born. He has been a consistently hard-working individual for himself as well as his community and has inspired many people from multiple cultures all over the world. As a childhood actor, he inspired me to further explore my artistic realm leading me to learn how to play the drums which led me on a musical journey at a young age. He has always been the perfect role model for independent success while never compromising himself or his beliefs.

“2 Real” is your second single since the release of “Only Way”. On the success of Only Way, was your approach to producing this track any different?

Yes, the approach was different due to the fact I freestyled this track all the way through and structured it afterward. As for “Only Way” was written then the verses were tracked. I freestyled “2REAL” due to feeling more comfortable within my artistry. My first trip to Canada I made one song in three, five-hour studio sessions and my second trip I made six songs in four, five-hour studio sessions. This all took place in my first year of doing music including this interview.  This too can be obtained when you set for a goal and the only way is up.

Please tell us more about your new clothing brand, 2REAL?

Being the “2REAL” version of yourself means digging down not into the first layer but the second layer of your core to get whatever it is you need to get done, DONE! Being “2REAL” means no grey areas it’s only black or white, right or wrong, this or that. If you’re not the “2REAL” version of yourself how can you be “2REAL” for someone else or let alone have anything to say. I’m striving every day to be the “2REAL” version of myself because that’s all I would want from anybody else. I got “2REAL” tatted on my neck at the age of 21 because everything that happens in life is “2REAL” and I’m “2REAL” of a person.

Please share your experience of working with Canadian DJ and producer KYNGS

It was dope!!! They were extremely welcoming, made me feel like family, a southern hospitality vibe when working with them. Their production is stupid insane, they can make a beat within a snap of a finger. They are young, talented, on the rise and I am blessed to have had an opportunity to work alongside them. They foresaw “2REAL”.

Are there any other artists and producers you’d be overjoyed to work with and why?

Of course. There are multiple people in the industry that I would love to work with. One of my first choices would have to be Zaytoven producing a BilionAir Carter and Gucci Mane album. My next choice would be a Carter 22 Album with Lil Wayne. Then there would come an R&B album with singer/ songwriter the Dream just to name a few.

Do you have anything else in the pipeline we can look forward to?

I have a “2REAL” event coming up on the 26th of February at the World Stage in Leimert Park where I and other artists will be performing. I also will be releasing an EP this year with no specific date yet but I want to give the fans a variety of great music at one time. You all deserve it! A lot of big things are happening this year.
