Ramon Jackson was born and raised in “Naptown”, Indianapolis, IN. His music roots are in Gospel, Blues, and R&B, with a hint of hip-hop. He started learning music as a pre-teen but didn’t pursue his music career until 2015 when he moved to NYC and began learning the industry. Ramon released his debut album “The First time” in 2017 and was blessed to have a song in syndication in 8 countries from the project. Because of this, he has played extensively in London, Paris, Gothenburg, Rotterdam, and all over the United States. You can find some of his fan favorites on his YouTube channel attached below. And as usual, you can stream and download his music on all digital platforms. We had the pleasure to speak with him about his career.
Thank you for agreeing to catch up with Occhi Magazine. For readers unfamiliar with you and your background, what drew you to a career in the arts?
My career in the arts (singer/songwriter/performer) was inspired by Prince. At a young age, I knew I wanted to perform because hearing and seeing Prince perform with emotion and passion really made me feel like I could do anything. I started my journey many years later after trying corporate careers but never finding fulfillment. Pursuing music is definitely the best decision I could have made because I get to own my artistry and explore my creativity while inspiring others.
Aside from Prince, were there any other influences?
Some of my early influences are from the Motown roster. I’m an artist in residence at the Legendary Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar in NYC and they wrote a lot of the Motown catalog as well as many songs post-Motown that are the fabric if Soul music of all genres. Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford have definitely helped shape me as a songwriter and performer.
Which three traits define you? Hmmmm, I would say persistent, comedic, and soulful are three dominant characteristics
Please tell us about your latest project
My latest project “Juke Joint” is a Blues album written by myself with Cgaz Shepard, Andre Henry, and my band on production (Angelo Bridges, Earl Shovan, Fred Manns, Marco Vaughn). It’s a journey through relationships and my emotional experiences while dealing with the various relationships. It has several styles of Blues from traditional to experimental.
What other projects are in the pipeline?
I’m currently working on a deluxe album for “Juke Joint” as well as a visual album that will be shot this summer. It’s always exciting to shoot videos for the music.
