An all-star sextet of Messenger Legacy and Jazz Messenger alumni celebrate the musical alchemy of drummer, bandleader, composer, and educator. Ralph Peterson.
Peterson, a third-generation drummer, who followed a path formed by his grandfather and several uncles, passed in 2021. Frequently described as a force of nature, the drummer and accomplished trumpeter led numerous jazz ensembles, large and small. As the founder of the Onyx record label, he had a deep commitment to mentoring and teaching. His legacy, and ambition to spread the good word of jazz lives on.
On what would have been his 61st birthday, the May 20th concert will showcase compositions by Ralph Peterson and members of the forward-thinking Messenger Legacy band. The evening will include tunes from 2020’s Onward and Upward—Peterson’s 25th release as a leader, and recently penned material from band members. The event takes place at the Shea Center for Performing Arts. The tickets are as follows:
$35 General Admission
