New York-based trio, The Dionysus Effect, was formed in a dark basement with a passion for writing songs that conjure up raw energy but are still catchy af with boundary-pushing hooks. Members, Christoph Paul (lead vocals/ bass), Sean Quinn Hanley (guitar/backup vocals), and Brett Petersen (drums) combine their diverse musical backgrounds and talents for a unique explosion of sound. Their music is an enthralling hybrid of grunge rock, darkwave indie, alt-rock, and pop, that forges a poetic expression filled with furious arena energy. The band blends several different eras of rock but the term Cocaine Rock encapsulates the sound.
The Dionysus Effect, The band’s self-titled debut album, is a 12-track experience full of stories on love, sex, addiction, passion, desire, and depression while bringing forth the darkest moments to light so that you see the stars.
Focus single “Heroin” is an autobiographical track detailing frontman Christoph’s experience in a teenage rehab clinic, where he witnessed firsthand the heartwrenching perils of heroin addicts. He confides, “The way they talked about doing heroin was like hearing someone talking about their first love. It was as depressing as it was poetic. These memories of all the addicts I met came back to me when I wrote the bass line of the song, and I had a story to share. This is one of the few times when the song wrote itself.”
