In The Spotlight: JAM Bookshop

In an era when digital comics have become just as readily available as print comics (and in some cases more), comic book shops allow a more intimate experience with direct contact with comic book lovers and experts. One shop proving just that is JAM. Located in Shoreditch, London, the bookshop attracts many comic enthusiasts, writers, and illustrators near and far. Unlike many bookstore chains, JAM goes out of its way to look after customers and considers regular visitors as part of its community.

At the helm of this enterprise is artist David Ziggy Greene. David, whose work has been printed in some of the most-read publications in the world, has published several books released by publishers in the UK and mainland Europe.

The artist is very open when discussing the ups and downs of running a small business in the current financial climate. He shares, ”I opened JAM in Oct 2022 after crowdfunding over £20,000. Being an illustrator (poor), I hadn’t the money to open the shop myself and the enthusiastic support was amazing. A year later support is still needed. It’s tough running a bookshop and with increasing costs like rent and bills, I need any help I can get to continue the shop for at least another year”.

JAM sells a myriad of publications, supporting independent publishers, illustrators, and graphic artists. Over its first year, it’s hosted several events including ‘Drawn to Change The World’ with children’s book illustrator and author Emma Reynolds, and ‘Just One More Thing’- an exhibition of illustrations celebrating the classic TV character Columbo, played by Peter Falk.
