Earthquake Lights is a Brooklyn-based rock band that doesn’t quite fit into the alt-rock genre they describe themselves as. Their music features orchestral strings that add a refined and almost classical feel to their dense arrangements. While the band is hesitant to compare themselves to jazz, there’s a distinctive jazz influence in the grooves and harmonic richness of their music. At the same time, their rock influences are clear, and they’ve been compared to Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Beck. Earthquake Lights has gained millions of streams to date, and their latest album, Desert Bloom, has charted nearly 30 times on the iTunes and Apple music charts. They’ve also been featured on Vulfpeck’s The Joy of Music, the Job of Real Estate.
Their latest release, “Pictures,” featuring Lindsey Lomis, explores the cultural phenomenon of social media and how it affects our mental health. Written allegorically, “Pictures” tells a story of mutually unrequited love. The song examines a personality that nostalgically romanticizes a past relationship, friendship, acquaintance, or fling prolonged by the ever-present role social media plays in our lives.
