We’re looking forward to The EFG London Jazz Festival, as more names are announced for 2024. New names include Brandee Younger, Charles Tolliver, Imelda May, Sam Gendel, and Thandi Ntuli.With tickets to his show at the Barbican on Saturday, 16 November SOLD OUT, legendary guitarist Pat Metheny has added an extra night due to huge demand on Friday, 15 November. Metheny’s versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists as diverse as Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to Jim Hall to Milton Nascimento to David Bowie. The show is in support of his forthcoming album, ‘MoonDial’.
Max Roach was one of the most influential and widely recorded modern percussionists, so to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, trumpeter Charles Tolliver (pictured)- who performed alongside Roach early in his career – is coming together with Darrell Green on drums, Camille Thurman on tenor saxophone and an all star UK big band led by Tony Kofi also at the Barbican on 18 November. They will perform some of the highlights of Max Roach’s career including the Drum Suite, composed by Charles Tolliver for the legendary drummer. To close the festival on Sunday, 24 November at the Barbican, on the occasion of the 30th year of democracy in South Africa, the Festival celebrates the outburst of Avant garde coming out of this inspirational scene with a special concert inviting its visionaries including Thandi Ntuli, Bokani Dyer, Thandiswa Mazwai, Keenan Meyer, The Brother Moves On and with guests from the UK such as Chelsea Carmichael and Soweto Kinch. The line-up is curated by The Brother Moves On’s Siyabonga Mthembu and pianist, composer, singer Thandi Ntuli.
