Over the past 12 months, in the spirit of commemorating the art and influence of Hip-Hop, Lincoln Center has presented performances headlined by major rap artists and DJs including, to name only a few, Pharoahe Monch, M.O.P., Talib Kweli and J.PERIOD. The venue continues its celebration of 50 years of Hip-Hop with a series of must-see documentary and narrative movie screenings, featuring one-of-a-kind live conversations with the creators and trendsetters that move the music and the culture forward. Films and speakers for its Hip-Hop Movie Night on Saturday, December 14 at 7:30 pm will be announced shortly.
Lincoln Center will be hosting De La Soul on January 17 at 8:00 pm. De La Soul, a group that represents New York City, Long Island, and the Native Tongues clique, is known for their unique combination of skilled wordplay, poetic flights of fancy, and eclectic musical sampling, which propelled them to the forefront of Hip-Hop’s golden age. Over their 35-year career, they have collaborated with nearly every major rap artist and released nine classic albums, including the groundbreaking platinum LP 3 Feet High and Rising. Two recent events have reshaped the group: the addition of their music to streaming services and the passing of founding member David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur. De La Soul’s headlining debut at David Geffen Hall represents their first major show in NYC in 16 months, marking a significant moment for the future of Hip-Hop.
