New York City’s vibrant jazz scene is about to welcome a fresh take on classic sounds, courtesy of French guitarist and composer Guillaume Muller. Known for his inventive approach to bebop and hard bop, Muller’s music is rooted in tradition but always ventures into new, unexpected territory. Now, with his forthcoming album “Six Pieces of Horace,” Muller invites listeners on a deeply personal journey through the legacy of jazz legend Horace Silver.

Muller is no stranger to musical exploration. With a bachelor’s in composition from Berklee College of Music and a master’s in Jazz Studies from NYU, he’s spent years honing his craft. His accolades include the Q.C.A. New Work grant and an honorary mention from the International Songwriting Competition—testament to his creative prowess and commitment to innovation.

But it’s his love for both solo guitar and Horace Silver’s timeless catalog that truly shines on this project. “Six Pieces of Horace” grew out of the quiet intensity of the pandemic in 2021. What began as a study of Silver’s discography from the 1950s and ’60s soon evolved into something more intimate and daring. Muller meticulously transcribed each instrument, handpicking his favorite tunes before arranging them for solo guitar—a process that distilled Silver’s spirit into six distinct tracks.

“I wanted the music to come out as organically as possible and be an honest representation of my playing in this specific moment,” Muller explains. Recorded in a New York studio with a sound engineer, the album captures the immediacy and authenticity of a live performance—each note a testament to the connection between artist and inspiration.

The record’s title and artwork nod lovingly to Horace Silver’s iconic “Six Pieces of Silver,” weaving homage and originality together in a seamless blend. With “Six Pieces of Horace,” Muller bridges generations, offering a heartfelt tribute that is both reverent and refreshingly new.

As the June 27th release date approaches, jazz aficionados and newcomers alike have reason to celebrate. Guillaume Muller’s “Six Pieces of Horace” promises to be a standout addition to the modern jazz landscape—a reminder of the enduring power of musical legacy, and the endless possibilities that come from making it your own.
