Kai Korven -Occhi Magazine: Showcasing Independent Artists, Creative Projects & Inspiring Stories in Visual Arts, Music, Film, and Literature
Toronto-based composer, songwriter, and producer Kai Korven brings a bright, unguarded burst of energy with his new single, “Bug on Head”—a playful, dynamic track that seamlessly blends indie pop and folk sensibilities with theatrical storytelling. Classically trained on violin from the age of three, Korven later expanded to piano, guitar, bass, and drums, building a versatile practice that moves fluently between orchestral scores, musical theatre, indie pop, folk, and hyperpop. His studio work often doubles as mentorship—supporting emerging artists as they shape their voices and refine their craft.

Beyond his solo releases, Korven’s music has underscored film, television, and theatre, most recently contributing to Manic Theatre Co.’s Fire and Frost: Prometheus, Pandora, and the Birth of Humankind. That sense of dramaturgy—of character, arc, and ensemble—flows through “Bug on Head,” a track that feels less like a solitary monologue and more like a chorus of friends.
“‘Bug on Head’ is really about the voices of my friends,” Korven shares. “This is by far the song I’ve collaborated with the most people on, and the depth of light and joy that comes from their voices is really present in the track. It feels like a burst of light – like everybody’s invited to join in! Look at us!”
The song’s origin story is as charming as its title. In spring 2024, while immersed in Irish jigs and reels, Korven heard a melody that wouldn’t let go. From the line “I had a fever dream about a bug,” a whimsical narrative took flight. This allegory gently examines emotional mechanisms and codependent dynamics with humor, warmth, and honesty. True to Korven’s multi-genre instincts, the arrangement balances intimate acoustic textures with buoyant, theatrical flourishes, making space for joy without shying away from complexity.
“Bug on Head” lands as a celebration of community: an invitation to sing along, to play, and to find light together. It’s a testament to collaboration as a creative engine—and to Korven’s gift for turning small, curious moments into generous, memorable songs.
