Neil Haverty
Toronto songwriter and composer Neil Haverty – best known as the frontman of alt-folk ensemble Bruce Peninsula and for his evocative score to the film Wildhood – returns with a powerful new single, “What I Don’t Need.” The contemplative indie track dives deep into the uneasy space between personal autonomy and the responsibilities we hold toward the people around us.
.
Written and performed by Haverty and produced by long-time collaborator Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett, Weaves), “What I Don’t Need” unfolds like an internal reckoning. The song moves from pensive, almost solitary verses into a cathartic chorus that bursts open, echoing Haverty’s own struggle to reconcile quiet introspection with the urge to speak out. Brooding synths set a shadowy tone, while dynamic drums and guitar riffs erupt at key moments, mirroring the constant push-and-pull between independence and interdependence.
.
“The title/refrain are intentionally cagey and avoidant,” Haverty explains. “I’m resistant to being told what to do even if it’s born of love and care for me. When you struggle with decision paralysis, you don’t want to re-litigate the decisions you already managed to make. That said, there’s a lot about oneself that is hard to see personally, but that friends and loved ones can easily spot. This song is about trying to listen to those voices, trying to see yourself as you’re seen and the responsibility to act that sometimes comes with that.”
.
“What I Don’t Need” arrives alongside a striking music video from director and animator Luca Tarantini (aka AOK), a creative force behind cinematic visuals for Andy Shauf and Tanya Tagaq, and a key contributor to the Nirvanna the Band the Show universe. The visual companion amplifies the song’s emotional turbulence, framing Haverty’s internal dialogue in vivid, cinematic terms.
.
In the studio, Haverty and Taheny leaned into a classic quiet/loud dynamic to capture the song’s topsy-turvy emotional terrain. The verses are anchored by minimal, dark synth textures that evoke introspection and hesitation, while the crashing chorus embodies the moment when a guarded inner monologue finally breaks the surface.
“This song travelled with me for many years and took on a few shapes before Leon and I pinned it down,” Haverty shares. “I wanted it to loudly proclaim what I didn’t want even though I’ve been quietly surveying the other side of things, too.”
With “What I Don’t Need,” Neil Haverty offers more than a new single; he presents a candid portrait of self-interrogation, the friction between self-determination and care, and the difficult work of truly hearing the people who know us best.
