Sony Pictures Classics proudly present The Choral, arriving in theaters nationwide on December 25th. Set against the backdrop of 1916, as World War I devastates the Western Front, the Choral Society in Ramsden, Yorkshire, faces the harsh reality of losing most of its men to the army. Refusing to let their music be silenced by the turmoil, the society’s determined committee chooses to press forward by recruiting local young men to fill their depleted ranks. Their search for a new chorus master leads them to Dr. Henry Guthrie, played by Ralph Fiennes—a driven and enigmatic figure who has recently returned from a career in Germany. Despite lingering suspicions about his past, Guthrie’s leadership brings a renewed sense of purpose to the group.

As conscription papers begin to arrive and the uncertainty of war deepens, the entire community discovers that their most powerful response to the chaos and loss surrounding them is to come together and create music. In this moving story, music becomes both a refuge and a means of healing for a village determined not to lose its spirit.

The Choral is directed by BAFTA, Olivier, and Tony Award winner Nicholas Hytner (The Crucible) and written by fellow award-winner Alan Bennett. This film marks their fourth acclaimed writer-director collaboration, following The Madness of King George, The History Boys, and The Lady in the Van. Starring Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam, Amara Okereke, Simon Russell Beale, and Thomas Howes, and produced by Kevin Loader, Nicholas Hytner, and Damian Jones, The Choral is a testament to the enduring power of music and community in the face of adversity.
