Irish Millie
At just 19, fiddler, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Irish Millie is quickly becoming a defining voice in the Canadian roots scene. Following a string of prestigious accolades, her latest single, “Wasted,” marks another milestone in a career already rich with promise and artistry. The track sits at the heart of her acclaimed EP, ‘Between Then and Now’—a project that beautifully captures life’s liminal spaces and the quiet, profound growth that happens in between chapters.
.
Millie’s ascent has been nothing short of remarkable. She is a seven-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, recently earning two 2026 nominations for Young Performer of the Year and Single of the Year for “You Were There.” These recent honors follow 2025 nods, including Folk Music Ontario’s Performing Artist of the Year and further CFMA recognition for her boundary-pushing album, ‘Grace.’
.
“Wasted” was written during Millie’s first year away from home, as she moved from Peterborough to Toronto for university. The song is a tender reflection on growing up, gratitude, and the realization that the foundation laid by those who raised us remains a constant source of support, even as independence creates new emotional distances. Through vivid, everyday imagery—laundry, packed boxes, the restless urge to move on—Millie explores the universal experience of leaving home, only to discover that the voices from our past are the very keys to finding our way when we feel lost.
.
As the song builds, it captures the weight of solitude and the ache of being “wasted” on the side of the road, anchored by the timeless reassurance that love endures, even across great distances. Musically, “Wasted” expands Millie’s sonic landscape, weaving piano, synth, and drums into the fabric of her signature fiddle. Recorded and co-produced in Toronto with her professor, Aaron Tsang, the track is a study in restraint and spatial honesty, and features her father, Murray Shadgett, on guitar—a testament to Millie’s evolving, cinematic approach to storytelling.
.
Currently balancing studies in Music Industry and Technology at the University of Toronto with a busy international performance schedule, Millie continues to impress audiences and critics alike. She’s played for crowds of over 10,000 and has earned praise from Celtic music icons Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, who celebrate her “fresh, lively” take on tradition.
With “Wasted,” Irish Millie invites listeners into that vulnerable space between leaving and arriving, reminding us that even in our loneliest moments, the love that shaped us remains steady and true.
