Symbiosis
The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Thomas Clausen Trio, and Jean Thorel unite for “Symbiosis – Tribute to Bill Evans,” an album that honours the enduring legacy of one of jazz’s most influential pianists. This project brings together three remarkable works, each offering a fresh perspective on Evans’ artistry.
.
The album opens with Palle Mikkelborg’s Bill Evans Suite from 1969, a vibrant reimagining of Evans’ beloved classics, including “Waltz for Debby” and “Time Remembered.” Thomas Clausen’s “For Pi” follows—a deeply personal jazz ballad that channels the spirit of Evans. Orchestrated for strings and trio, with Anders Malta’s trumpet lending a lyrical, poignant beauty, the piece resonates with emotional depth. The journey culminates in Claus Ogerman’s “Symbiosis,” presented here in its first full live concert performance, meticulously reconstructed.
.
Recorded live with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, “Symbiosis – Tribute to Bill Evans” offers a vivid and contemporary perspective on Evans’ timeless influence. The album seamlessly blends intimacy, sophistication, and orchestral grandeur, inviting listeners to experience jazz in a new light.
This release continues the orchestra’s creative partnership with Pentatone, building on a series of acclaimed recordings, including “Mozart: Violin Concertos” (2025), “Butterfly Lovers & Paganini” (2024), “Kozlowski: Requiem” (2024), and “Vivaldi: Four Seasons & Locatelli: Harmonic Labyrinth” (2023). With “Symbiosis – Tribute to Bill Evans,” the Singapore Symphony Orchestra reaffirms its commitment to exploring the boundaries of classical and jazz, celebrating the transformative power of musical collaboration.
