CHARLS
For singer-songwriter CHARLS, music has always been more than just a calling; it has been an intricate practice shaped by her surroundings, family, and the journey of self-discovery. Raised between Hull and the sunny allure of Costa Blanca, Charls grew up surrounded by the soul, classical, and rock influences present in her grandparents’ band. These early sounds did not merely serve as a backdrop; they became a musical inheritance, forming a foundation of emotion that continues to resonate in her work.
.
After cutting her teeth gigging across the north of England, she began the first chapter of her career as Charlotte Jane, releasing her debut EP Nowhere To Hide in 2019, followed by Refuge. The projects showcased her textured vocal presence and an instinctive blend of gospel, R&B, and pop sensibility. A clean break in Los Angeles with songwriter Toby Gad helped sharpen her songwriting lens, while tours alongside Lewis Capaldi placed her voice in front of new audiences, earning her a loyal following and the kind of industry attention that signals momentum.
.
Now, she returns under the moniker CHARLS, a pet name that carries the intimacy of being known and the clarity of coming back to yourself. It marks her re-emergence as an independent act and, as she describes it, the most me she has felt in years. There’s something quietly powerful in that shift: a name that doesn’t feel like a brand first, but a person.
Following a hiatus and a period of regrouping, CHARLS found her way back to writing in 2022, in the wake of a break-up. Heartbreak, in her hands, becomes less a dead end and more a doorway, the kind of emotional rupture that forces you to tell the truth. She began arranging sessions with producer Cam Blackwood and songwriter Nick Hahn, and what followed was a season of reclamation: a return to self-confidence, to creative instinct, and to the steady belief that her voice still had somewhere to go.
That belief now fuels her latest work, as she uses the language of heartbreak to begin crafting her debut album not as a diary of damage, but as proof of survival. The songs feel like they’re reaching for something bigger than catharsis: a new emotional posture, a new way of standing.
.
Listeners can dive into this chapter with her latest single, “Out In The Open.” This release continues the theme of self-trust and vulnerability that has been developing throughout her recent work. It follows the self-affirming track “Trust My Gut,” the anthemic “Begging On My Birthday,” and the tender, honest song “Heads Up.”
