The Movie Partnership has announced that Nobu, the acclaimed, intimate documentary exploring the life and legacy of culinary icon Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, will arrive on digital platforms from 18 May. Already celebrated on the festival circuit, Nobu made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it drew strong critical attention for its warmth, access, and appetite-inducing detail. Awards Radar called the film a tasty look at a very inventive Sushi Chef, while MovieWeb praised it as a fascinating portrait and fitting summary for a documentary that treats its subject not as a brand, but as a human story built from risk, resilience, and relentless craft.
.
Nobu examines the empire Matsuhisa has built, offering an intimate portrait of a man who has redefined global gastronomy not only through technique, but through vision. The film also traces the partnership that helped turn that vision into an international cultural touchpoint, spotlighting his business collaborators Robert De Niro and Meir Teper.
Rather than staying on the surface of celebrity and success, the documentary leans into the lived reality behind the name: the discipline, the pressure, and the creative precision required to innovate inside a tradition-bound culinary world.
.
One of the film’s most compelling strengths is its access. Nobu grants viewers an inside look at Matsuhisa’s process, revealing the alchemy and meticulous attention behind his signature dishes. It explores the inspirations that shaped his innovations and the choices that helped revolutionise Japanese cuisine for a global audience without losing the soul of where it began.
.
For Matsuhisa, the film is more than a retrospective; it’s personal. The documentary, directed by Matt Tyrnauer, holds a deep personal significance for him. He holds much admiration for Tyrnauer’s ability to capture not only his journey as a chef but also his development as an individual. This focus on perseverance and the importance of community infuses the documentary with an emotional depth, underscoring the idea that true greatness is rarely achieved in isolation, even if only one name is remembered by the world.

Nobu will be available on digital platforms from 18 May.
