World Heart Beat’s Jazz in the Gardens 2026 series is set to deliver an evening that reaches far beyond entertainment on Thursday, 16 July 2026, as award-winning vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd arrives with her Music for the Soul programme — a performance rooted in sacred reflection, historical remembrance, and the enduring spirit of jazz.
.
Floyd’s work draws from the African American spiritual and gospel foundations that helped shape the genre, using voice, composition, and improvisation to explore themes of faith, resilience, memory, freedom, and human dignity. This is jazz as testimony — music that honours the past while speaking directly to the present. Her repertoire doesn’t simply reference history; it converses with it, paying tribute to towering figures such as Frederick Douglass, Octavius Valentine Catto, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, while illuminating the intellectual legacy and lived struggle behind their names.
.
As All About Jazz has noted, Floyd’s lyrical vision is carried by “some of the slickest, most erudite and daring jazz,” making her performances both deeply moving and intellectually engaging. Expect a set that balances reverence with risk — where sacred jazz traditions meet fearless musicianship, and where every phrase feels intentional.
.
For this special Jazz in the Gardens date, Floyd will be joined by the Ruth Naomi Floyd Quartet, with special guest Julian Joseph, promising an evening of rich interplay, emotional clarity, and musical depth — the kind of night that lingers long after the final note.
.
Doors open at 6:00 pm, with the stage time set for 7:30 pm. For further information on the artist and the show, visit the World Heart Beat website.
