Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, conductor, band leader, arranger, and educator, and Los Angeles, his hometown, is where he lives and works. The depth and range of his output is vast: he has contributed to more than 600 recordings and 2,500 live concerts. He has a rare gift and the serious devotion to develop it, moving easily between genres and generations of musical and cultural influence and shaping them into presentations that feel cohesive and magical.
Now, in the year of John Coltrane’s 100th birthday, he presents ANANTA: Spirit Of Coltrane, an album honouring a lifelong influence. Atwood-Ferguson leads a 21-piece collective of musicians at the top of their craft, including Brandee Younger, Jeff Parker, Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins, Shabaka Hutchings, Azar Lawrence and Joel Ross. The record also includes an original composition featuring words by poet Aja Monet.
To mark the announcement, he shares “Compassion,” featuring Flying Lotus, Immanuel Wilkins and David Virelles. The lead single and its video are available now. For more than three decades, Coltrane has held a singular place in Atwood-Ferguson’s imagination: a musician to admire, a master to study, and a guiding light. That relationship sits at the heart of ANANTA: Spirit Of Coltrane, a sweeping new meditation on Coltrane’s music and philosophy, performed by some of the most exciting voices in contemporary and improvised music. It is a document of gratitude and a tribute grounded in Coltrane’s spiritual legacy, reaching beyond jazz toward cosmic music.
ANANTA: Spirit Of Coltrane is released on 30 October on Impulse! Records.
The album is available via Impulse Records.
