Spoulaire

I first met Soulaire, a talented LA based (a mixture of R&B and hip hop) musician, through a mutual friend we have at the launch of her LA showroom. I had a feeling he was an artist and when we spoke about similar passions, I genuinely loved getting to know him as well as his sensitivity, soulfulness and strong belief in his faith. Soulaire intrigued me so I was thrilled to have the wonderful opportunity to interview him for Occhi Magazine and find out where all that inspiration comes from.

SoulaireHow did you know music was your “calling?” Were you inspired by someone in your family?

I think I have always known music has been my calling. I remember being about 12 or 13 and this prophet, truly prophesied about my ministry in music. As far back as I can remember I’ve been singing. Everything that I do centers around music. I’m singing and walking. Everywhere I go a melody follows.

How would you describe your music and creative process of how you work?

I would describe my music as something that’s very euphoric. I aspire to inspire. My music is a mixture of R&B and hip hop. I create best at night and feel like that’s when I’m most creative. I love a glass of champagne to loosen me up throughout the creative process. I like to be as free as possible. That allows me to be transparent and give the unadulterated, raw truth.  Sage, honey-lemon, tea, and good vibes also are key.

I am assuming you are constantly networking. LA can be tough as an artist as well as the added elements of marketing and business. How do you handle this?

I’m always networking and that’s a really big part of living in LA. However, there is a balance that needs to take place. You definitely have to network but there comes a point in time you have to make sure that you have a product or something to be able to deliver to the people. I do believe that your network can build your net worth. I know it sounds cliché I’m really just learning to trust in God’s timing.

What are some of your musical goals?

My biggest musical goal is creating timeless music. I most certainly want my music to live on far beyond my years. I think every artist would love to receive a Grammy. (I as well).
However, in all honestly just breaking boundaries in music and creating my own genre as well as songwriting for other artists are all critical milestones.

SoulaireTell me about producing your first event. I had the opportunity to attend and it was a great night as well as a big accomplishment. I also loved that you collaborated with Venia, a fabulous fashion collection based in Los Angeles. Do you want to produce more events?

Yes, my first event ‘Soul SlayZe’, was an event that highlights emerging artists and fashion designers. It’s kind of an event that helps people identify with who I am as an artist. I love music and fashion. I style as well. With the event, I have four artists perform and I close out the show with brand new music, followed by a fashion show as the finale. I collaborated with Venia Collection which is an incredible brand starting to make its mark in the fashion world. This first installment was tied in with my birthday. It was amazing to receive such an outpouring of love. So many people came out. I was overwhelmed and felt so such an internal sense of gratitude. I am actually looking forward to throwing more events in the future. The second installment is coming at the beginning of 2017.

Who are some of the musical artists that inspire you?

Wow, I’m inspired by so many great artists from the ‘late greats’ Michael Jackson, Prince and Whitney Houston. I think Monica would have to be have to be my all-time favorite singer alive. I’ve been rocking with her since 95. Lauryn Hill, Tupac and Lil Kim are also all amazing.

If you were not doing music (and I know personally music is exactly what you aspire to), what would you be interested in?

I’m sure it would be something in fashion. Fashion really inspires me daily and makes me happy. Someday I’d like to have my own clothing line.
