We chatted with Humberto about his book, Parenting Like a Rockstar. Check the interview below.
Please describe the book Parenting Like a Rockstar.
A self -help book that helps single parents, or anyone who can relate to raising a child. This book will walk you through the steps and the systems that I used in raising my own children. It will inspire you to become a better person, parent and communicator.
Was this topic suggested, or was it something you were already interested in?
This topic was suggested by a few people, who saw me struggle throughout the years as I was starting to write about my own life. At that time, my communication with my own kids was rough and I had to look deep into myself and find other ways to communicate with them. I had to learn to be creative.
What types of research did you need to do for the book?
My research was really from talking to many other single parents and how they had dealt with their children. And I also looked at how I was raised and the things that my parents used on me growing up. Some things I applied to certain situations but other times I did not. I learned along the way that every child is very different and unique. It astounded me how I could use one method in raising a child and then switch it to a totally different method for the next.
When I was going through my roughest times as a single parent, I went through some therapy to enhance my communication with my children. I wanted to become the best I could be as a parent in order to help my kids. But it actually end up helping me the most. It took me a while to realize the importance of how to really interact with them. I tried everything from sitting down with them one on one to talking to them in a group.
How long did the research take?
It actually took me over two years to really gather solid information and be able to ask the right kind of people. I looked for single parents, divorced parents, and grand-parents.
I was patient enough to really wait for the right time and to find those individuals who were in the same position as I was. It’s kind of like when you are a first time parent and you start noticing more first time parents around you. You just recognize them more than before because you are now in the same realm as they are.
Who will this book appeal to?
This book will appeal to single parents, divorced parents, and anyone else who can benefit from becoming better fathers and mothers to their children. In this book, they will find other ways that can assist them in interacting better with their kids.
What is your next project?
I am currently working on several TV and Film projects for 2017-2018. I also just started writing my second book. It’s still untitled.
What is your writing process/writing routine?
I tend to be spontaneous. I like writing when I’m inspired. I can be alone in my room in the dark before I even begin to put a pen to paper. It seems to help my creativity a lot. When my mind is clear and I’m not pressured to write, I feel free and can write more effectively.
Do you use pen and paper, or computer to write your drafts?
I always start with a pen and paper. I guess I consider myself old school in that way. I really enjoy it. Most of the time I make a lot of errors and have to scratch off things that are not necessary but it’s kind of fun to sit there and just write whatever is on your mind. I tend to drift a lot so my mind takes me to deep profound places and to many unknowns. It’s kind of cool in a way!
Are you part of a critique group, or does only your editor/publisher provide feedback?
I am not a part of any critique group. I have amazing editors. They make me look good!
Let’s talk about you. What is your background?
I come from a very poor childhood. I had polio at an early age. It is a virus that spreads to your brain and spinal cord, causing paralysis. I walk with a limp, which I like to call my swagger. lol
I was born in Santiago, Ixcuintla, Nayarit, Mexico. I was adopted by my aunt and uncle, when I was very little and raised in San Jose, California. I am of European descent. A little Italian, Spanish, and Mexican.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy long walks on the beach . . . just kidding! I actually enjoy just spending time with my family and friends, when I am not working so hard. I enjoy all kinds of music. I am a big 80’s fan!
I also like to DJ mix, like on Technics 1200 turntables? The old school way, with vinyl records! Although I haven’t done that in a while, I’m sure it’s just like riding a bike. It’s a lot of fun and it actually relaxes me.
Do you have a favorite book – fiction or non-fiction?
Yes, one of my favorite books is by Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich. It has taught me so much about the power of our mind and how we can control it to benefit our success in life.
What writing advice do you have for novice writers?
The only advice I can give anyone who is getting ready to write for the first time is this . . . just write your heart out! Ignore those who tell you, you can’t do it or you’re not good enough. Look at me! I did it and I pushed my way through it! I stopped listening to bad advice and negativity. I learned to write from within.
Do you have a website or other platform, where readers can find more information about you and your books?
Yes, you can log on to www.MezaBooks.com or just find me on all social media platforms, @HumbertoLMeza
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I’d like to just say that anyone who is in any doubt of themselves should take a second look in the mirror. We tend to think too much as human beings. Stop thinking! And start doing with what is in your heart. We self defeat ourselves all the time and the only way to win, is to push through that ugly, muggy, fog that is keeping us from our own success. Be who you are inside and show the world your true colors.
