Andre Colquhoun is a Canadian actor, filmmaker, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He has worked on various projects in front of and behind the camera. We had the pleasure to catch up with him and discuss his latest music project titled ‘Short Term.’
Thanks for granting the interview and congratulations on your career to date. Listening to the lyrics, are there any particular experiences or chapters in your life you used for inspiration?
I appreciate you! Ever since I was little, music ran in my blood. I truly wanted to use my God-given gifts so that’s why I created the EP Short Term. The EP is basically pieces of reality expressed through song.
You write music that seems to connect with others on a meaningful level. How important is it you engage audiences, with topical and relatable subjects?
It’s very important to me. Firstly, anything I create needs to connect with me first. If it doesn’t, I don’t create. I wouldn’t want to put out something that’s not true to me. People are very smart and can smell a fake from a mile. Everything I create comes from the heart and whatever story that is, I definitely want people to be able to relate and to know that they’re not alone.
All songs from the EP were written, produced, and sung by you. The renowned indie artist “Sylo Nozra” is the mastermind behind the mix/master. Please share your experience working with Sylo on this project?
Working with Sylo Nozra was amazing! From the get-go, he understood my vision. I told him I wanted the mix to sound like a movie. He then started working on the mix and in a couple of days sent back the first mix. I listened and was in awe. It was exactly what I wanted. Obviously, it didn’t end at the first mix/master. The structure was there, but we kept working at it until we were both happy. I truly applaud Sylo for his hard work and patience.
You released a 10-minute music video/mini-movie on your YouTube channel for the Short Term EP. Tell us more about the video and its composition?
Love and Identity play a strong role in the music video/mini-movie as well as a lot of other components. I want audiences to watch and come up with their own meaning. The music video took two days to film. It was very quick. It was one of the most challenging and exhilarating projects I’ve worked on. I’m very pleased with how everything turned out. Shout out to my entire team: Producer & Director Of Photography: Julian Lomaga, Production Designer: Claudia Dall’Orso, Focus Puller: Artem Mykhailetskyi, Still Photographer: Zeik Inocencio, Gaffer: Ash Tailor, Mixing & Mastering Engineer: Sylo Nozra, Colourist: Clinton Homuth, and Colourist Assistant: Kevin Wu.
What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?
Freedom. No one controls me but me. I call all the shots. That’s extremely important for any artist.
You’re also an actor with several credits to your merit. Are you as passionate about your acting as you are with your music?
Music and acting have always been a part of my life. I love them equally. When I feel like I want to sing, I sing. When I feel like I want to act, I act. I take both fields very seriously. I’m truly grateful for my God-given gifts.
What projects are in the pipeline?
I’m definitely working on more music and I also have a narrative feature film in the works. A dream is meaningless if there isn’t a goal in place. I set my goal, and I’ll achieve my dream.
