We had the wonderful opportunity to feature actress Danielle Sagona. Check out the interview below.
Danielle Sagona got her start in various short films and other independent productions (like a well-recognized Star Wars fan film) before transitioning into major parts in such films as At the End of the Day, which releases next month on VOD. First things first, let’s get the important stuff out of the way – Star Wars: A Light in the Darkness! What is that? How did that come about?
Ha! Yeah, it’s a Star Wars Fan Film that my friend Fed Wetherbee wrote and directed. So, I hopped on board to work with him along with the great cast and crew.
Were you a Star Wars fan growing up?
Oh, gosh I’m probably going to be shunned for this, I wasn’t. I hadn’t been exposed to it. I’m just now starting to appreciate it and have finally started my Star Wars homework.
How do you like the JJ Abrams-directed films?
I enjoy them. I think what I admire most about him is all the hats he wears. He produces, writes, and composes the music— I mean, c’mon.
As an actor, is it just as gratifying working on fan projects or short films than it is feature films?
When I’m working, whatever it’s on, it is gratifying.
And what was the appeal of At The End of the Day for you?
Actually, it was my bestie, Leander Suleiman, who steered me toward the film. She’s a phenomenal actor, and her instincts are insane. After reading the synopsis, she called me and said, “Danielle, you have to read for this. This is you. This film is you; Alyssa is you!” Honestly, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be a part of this important story. I’m so thankful for that.
Stories about love and equality are my anthems. It’s unfathomable that there are still some people in the world that have intolerance and misconceptions towards the LBGT community. I’m grateful to be a part of something that, hopefully, can open a few eyes and hearts. Plus, any film with a strong female lead is a dream.
Could you relate to your character?
I definitely related to Alyssa. I was fortunate to grow up in a house that taught love and equality for all. A majority of my friends are gay, and I’ve been active in the Drag world for the past 10 years as a back-up dancer for various Queens. I also related to Alyssa’s Pollyannaish attitude. Like her, I love to look on the bright side of things and keep going despite the inevitable obstacles in life.
It’s a message movie but it’s also entertaining – how do you feel Kevin O’Brien achieved that perfect balance?
It’s so well written— with love, and heart, and honesty. There are merry moments throughout balanced with scenes that make you feel and think. It sure doesn’t hurt that it’s a beautiful film to watch, thanks to the extraordinary talent of our DP, Brandon Hyde.
Have you seen the film with an audience yet? How did they react?
I have, and that has been the most rewarding thing about this process. It’s such a great feeling to hear the audience laugh. It’s moving to see them cry. And hearing people’s thoughts after the movie is a privilege. We’re honored that our audience feels safe enough to share their own struggles of discrimination. It serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done in this world— to grow ourselves into a more loving, accepting place.
Any big fans of the film that you didn’t expect?
The Mother of Ryan Skipper. One of the characters mentioned in At the End of the Day is loosely based on her son, Ryan, who was tragically taken at the of age 25 because of a hate crime. His mother saw the film. She told me how much she enjoyed it and how much she appreciated the message of forgiveness. That will always be a memorable moment for me.
Will you work with Kevin again?
Absolutely! He is the most giving director I’ve ever worked with. He is collaborative and encouraging; a joy to be around! Working with Kevin comes with the perks of working with Teresa (his lovely wife and top-notch Producer) and the stellar crew he’s cultivated.
What’s next for you? Any dream projects? Maybe a Star Wars film along the way!?
I’ve got some exciting things coming up that I can’t talk about just yet. But, hey, if you want to stay connected, I’m on Instagram: @DanielleSagona.
