Black Moon Media and Screen Siren Pictures announced today that Alex Caulfield’s debut feature film What Comes Nexthas gone to camera in Vancouver. The feature film stars Alison Thornton (Nancy Drew), Mena Suvari of American Beauty (Above), Aaron Ashmore (Ginny & Georgia), Maya Chariandy (The Good Doctor), and Stephen Lobo (Snowpiercer).
What Comes Next is an intergenerational coming-of-age story that follows 17-year-old Tanya (Thornton) as she begins an ill-advised relationship with an older family friend Grant (Ashmore) before heading off to college. Unbeknownst to Tanya, Grant had an affair with her mother, Laura (Suvari), a decade earlier. Tanya and her mother must each navigate the liminal space between action and consequence over the course of a single summer.
Alex Caulfield is an award-winning non-binary director and writer with a background as a creative producer. Alex’s recent credits include the Lifetime television movie The Podcast Murders, the award-winning short films Dear Departed (2021), Do We Leave This Here, and Last Night. Alex is an alum of the National Screen Institute, the Whistler Film Festival Talent Labs and they were awarded a Creator Mentorship from the Geena Davis Institute. They were also one of eight participants selected for the Women in the Director’s Chair Story and Leadership program with What Comes Next. Embracing a passion for “telling stories that make people feel less alone,” Alex is known for their work on character-driven films portraying complex female and non-binary protagonists. They are deeply committed to supporting queer, trans, and gender non-conforming people, autistic people and those dealing with mental illnesses by creating greater onscreen representations and providing professional mentorship opportunities.
What Comes Next is written and directed by Alex Caulfield (The Podcast Murders), Director of Photography is Leonardo Harim (Donkeyhead), producers are Kate Kroll (Portraits From a Fire) and Tony Cerciello (The Day We Left), Executive Producers are Trish Dolman (Bones of Crows) and Steven Thibault (Joker), and Louisa Birkin (Riceboy Sleeps) is the Production Designer. The film also features performances by Sasha Warner, Christina Jastrzemska (Virgin River), Daxton Gujral (Fakes), Kalyn Miles (To All the Boys: Always and Forever), and River Codack (Son of a Critch). Any SAG actors on this film have been granted permission from the union as this is a Canadian indie film.
What Comes Next is currently filming in the Greater Vancouver area, Langley and Maple Ridge, and was made possible through the support of Telefilm Canada.
