Uncork’d Entertainment is set to release Alrik Bursell’s highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller The Alternate this September. Produced by Jeffrey Allard, executive producer of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the movie stars Ed Gonzalez Moreno, Natalia Dominguez, and Syra McCarthy. The film was scripted by director Bursell, who has directed five short films including Strange Thing, which played at over 20 film festivals worldwide. The plot sees Jake, a videographer, discover a portal to another dimension in which he has everything he has always wanted: the perfect version of his wife, the career of his dreams, and the daughter he never had. He starts traveling back and forth between these two worlds but soon sees that his alternate is not as perfect as he seems, and perfection comes with a price.
This is a fusion of previous films that tackle the theme of parallel universes. Entertaining, with an interesting twist, the film provides an opening to present a different narrative from popular big-budget projects such as ‘The One’, ‘Source Code’, and Marvel’s recent Spider-verse. Unfortunately, the plot has several minor flaws and, in my opinion, misses the much-needed opportunity to fully explain the origins of the mysterious portal. However, that does create an opportunity for a sequel. The cast, headed by Ed Gonzalez Moreno, provides watchable performances, and the special effects, minus the finale, deliver. In all, it’s a watchable movie for avid followers of the sci-fi genre. The Alternate will be released on DVD and Digital on September 13th.
Movie Rating: 3 stars.
