Ana de Lara’s Award-Winning Film ‘Good Girls Don’t’ Forms Part of CBC’s Canadian Reflections Program

Lily Pictures and Ana de Lara Films announced the national debut of Filipina-Canadian Director Ana de Lara’s award-winning film ‘Good Girls Don’t’ as a part of CBC’s Canadian Reflections Program on May 20th at 11:30 PM and will then be available on the free CBC Gem streaming service.

The production boasts an all-star cast featuring the talents of Evryle Ebora (Once Upon a Time, The Whispers), Jane McLean (Workin’ Moms, Dexter), Canadian Screen Award winner Lorne Cardinal (Corner Gas), and John Emmet Tracy (Yellowstone, Batwoman).

Good Girls Don’t is a lighthearted comedy that follows young Filipina-Canadian, Marilou (Ebora), who has a dream of playing professional basketball, and a religious mother (McLean) who deems the sport as unladylike, threatening that Marilou will turn into a boy if she joins the school team. The only one who seems to care about Marilou’s predicament is a man who hangs around her house. Quite literally hanging in every room, on every wall…White Jesus. Using humor and magic realism, the film explores gender inequality through the eyes of a young girl set on following her dreams. This charming film holds a deeper message and explores issues regarding the importance of female youth empowerment.

The film launched on the international festival circuit and earned more than a dozen awards in North America and Europe including the 2019 Matrix Award, Outstanding Achievement in a BC Short Film at the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival, and the Audience Award at Romania’s KINOdeseea International Children’s Festival. On top of these awards, Good Girls Don’t won another 11 awards from numerous film festivals globally.
