Vertigo Releasing is thrilled to announce the UK and Irish cinema release of the gripping post-apocalyptic thriller, 40 Acres, arriving in cinemas from 1st August.
Set in a famine-ravaged future, 40 Acres follows Hailey Freeman (Danielle Deadwyler) and her family—the last descendants of African American farmers who settled in rural Canada after the first Civil War in 1875. As the world around them collapses, the Freemans must defend their ancestral home against those determined to take everything they have left.
.

The film stars acclaimed actress Danielle Deadwyler (Till, I Saw The TV Glow, Carry-On), alongside Kataem O’Connor (Murdoch Mysteries, Time Cut, Heartland) and Michael Greyeyes (The King Tide, 1923, Wild Indian). 40 Acres made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival to enthusiastic critical acclaim and currently boasts a 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by R.T. Thorne (Blindspot, The Porter) in his feature film debut, 40 Acres is the result of a powerful collaboration with co-writer Glenn Taylor and story by Thorne and Lora Campbell (#Interns, Yoga 101). Thorne’s two decades of directing experience bring a unique vision and depth to this timely and thought-provoking story.
.
Although violent in parts, the film’s subject matter makes clear the necessity of its intensity, and viewers are encouraged to pay close attention to appreciate the depth and complexity of the plot. Danielle Deadwyler delivers a strong, fierce performance, completely transforming herself for the role of Hailey Freeman and setting a new benchmark in her career. With a decent climactic ending and a clear directorial vision, 40 Acres is a must-see for fans of smart, genre-defying cinema.
