Montreal-based singer-songwriter MAGELLA. Influenced by jazz singers such as Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, she uses her powerful, warm tones to express diasporic blues that examine themes of isolation, identity, and resistance. She writes songs based on various music influences with a combination of electronic, jazz and vocal improvisation. Her latest track titled Checkmate arrived from many pent-up emotions.
The track features “Dirty Ice,” which she wrote as a way to soothe myself after a friendship ended with repercussions. It is a reminder to carry on no matter what is being thrown at you. MAGELLA wrote it in a way to forgive oneself for not listening to their intuition and keeping on their rose-colored glasses in unstable interactions and relationships.
Working with New York based producer, Swaya, the artist explored different time signatures on the song, facilitating a fluid sound that reflects life and its unpredictability. Check it out!
