Country/Pop artist Abigail Neilson drops her single entitled, ‘November Air’ today. For Neilson, the heart and soul of music are rooted in its ability to connect with others on a deeper level, and coincidentally, the Seattle-based artist has a lot to get off her chest. Her honest and captivating ballads cover the spectrum of human emotion — everything from the joy of falling in love, to the agony of heartbreak and the strength of female empowerment. November Air continues this successful formula. It’s a dreamlike romantic song about wanting to keep a new love to yourself before it’s open for the world to have an opinion about it. The illicit love story makes being together seem impossible but makes being with this person even more exciting. We had the opportunity to speak to her about the track, and the last year of songwriting during the pandemic.
Abigail, It’s great to speak to you again. “November Air,” tells a relatable story. Please share with us how you came to write the track?
“November Air,” was written based on my own experience with falling in love and what that had looked like through my eyes. Falling in love is something that is so unique and personal to everyone who loves and cares for another person. I wanted to write a song that portrayed this truthfully to what my heart was feeling during a time when I was falling in love with someone.
As with your previous releases, this song will undoubtedly resonate with audiences and listeners. What do you want listeners to take away from this track?
I hope they take away the message that love can meet you at the most unique times in your life, and if you truly care for someone you should show it and not let the opinion of others take it away from you.
Please tell us more about the production of the track, and is there a forthcoming video?
I wrote “November Air,” about a month before I made the trip to Nashville to record it. Recording this song truly felt magical. I wanted it to really portray how it feels to fall in love. In the studio, my producer, Robbie Artress, played this lovely piano melody that really captured how falling in love truly felt to me. From there, the song just fell into place. My favorite part was recording the vocoder parts you hear in the opening of this song. It really changed the whole mood of the song from just portraying what falling in love feels like and added elements like curiosity, mystery, and an enchanting feeling. As for a music video, I don’t have plans on filming one at this time, but that could change in the next few months.
You’re a prolific songwriter. How large is your backlog of material?
I always say that songwriting is something that I can’t not do. It’s something I do every day whether it’s good or bad or something that resembles more of a diary entry that I’d never want to release or play for anyone. As for the songs I’ve written and co-written that I do want to share with the world, I’m coming up to almost 200 songs.
You’ve carved out a successful career and following. What has been your favorite aspect of being a music artist?
My favorite aspect of being an artist has been being able to share stories, as well as create stories and songs that give people hope, something to relate and hold onto, and the reminder that no one is ever truly alone in what they feel.
Many artists have marked this difficult period as significant in their careers and songwriting. How have you found this period, and what do you think the industry will look like, particularly for independent musicians, moving forward?
I think overall this period of time has made me more creative. I’ve gotten to write so many songs as well as co-write with so many people from all over the country. I’ve also spent more time alone with myself because of quarantine and that time really helped show me what is most important to me and what I really want most out of life, and now I know how to go after that once the world gets back to its new normal. As for the music industry, everything is always changing and evolving. Keeping up with that can be difficult but I think the best thing anyone can do is to be adaptable and excited about how things change.
So, what’s next?
I have another single waiting to be released, and after that, I’m excited to get to the studio to record more music to release as well as start planning to make the move down to Nashville in early 2022.
