The film distantly parallels the infamous true story of cannibal Armin Meiwes and Bernd Jürgen Brandes, his voluntary human meal. After the death of his wife, Jed Freeman (Christopher Mulvin) is suicidal and decides to take his life. He finds himself in a bar with a stranger called Lionel Flack, a disturbingly complex character with an indistinguishable North American accent, Jed agrees to Flack’s proposal of being eaten to death.
This is a dark comedy horror that I personally would’t prioritise watching, due to the content and subject matter. This is overtly gruesome and not for the faint-hearted. However, co-writers Adam Leader and Richard Oakes illustrate their efficient execution in filmmaking and proficient ability to draw viewers like me in with their cinematic storytelling and plot twists. The performances by the small cast are competently delivered under their direction, and Neal Ward provides a stand-out and disturbingly convincing performance as Flack. Whilst not as impactful as 2020’s Hosts, fans of these filmmakers and the genre will be fed and left fully satisfied.
