In lieu of Flowers, the latest album from composer and saxophonist Dave Anderson and his New York-based quartet, is a heartfelt tribute to the people and inspirations that have shaped his life. The album reflects on how we honor those who leave a lasting impact, whether through personal connections or artistic influence. Paying homage to jazz legends Wayne Shorter and Maria Schneider, as well as music educators and family members, the collection is a deeply personal and reflective work. In Lieu of Flowers will be released on May 20 via LABEL 1 Records.

Showcasing Anderson’s talents on tenor and soprano saxophones, the quartet features Chamber Music America grant-winning pianist Grant Richards, versatile bassist Lorin Cohen (on both acoustic and electric), and dynamic drummer Jimmy Macbride. Together, they deliver a modern quartet sound that balances innovation with a deep respect for jazz traditions.

“As a composer, I’ve aimed to capture the essence of each inspiration and create music that resonates with listeners through the voices of this incredible quartet,” Anderson shares. A veteran of Memo Acevedo’s Manhattan Bridges Orchestra and Pat Petrillo’s Big Rhythm Band, Anderson adds, “People express their appreciation for others in profound ways, and while loss often sharpens that perspective, this album is about celebrating those connections.”

The album’s ten original compositions, written by Anderson over several years and recorded specifically for this project, span a range of styles—from modern up-tempo swingers to ballads, contrafacts, and complementary pieces—showcasing the quartet’s versatility and emotional depth.
