Directed by David Liz, The Welder features a young couple Roe (Roe Sterling) and Eliza (Camilla Rodriguez) who travel to a secluded ranch to distress and bond away from any distractions. Unfortunately for them, they become the subject of an unsettling experiment by the host William Godwin (Vincent De Paul) who, having lost his wife in a hate crime, is determined to create a being incapable of racial hatred. How can this be achieved? By the welding of body parts extracted from people of different racial backgrounds.
David Liz, as director and cinematographer, sets up an eerie feel with shaky handheld shots and cut-aways in the dark as the creature stands watching, at times over the couple as they sleep. The film is entertaining, leaving an expectation to see the climatic event where William’s intentions are revealed. However, the lead-up to this was slightly strung out and the final revelation was a little disappointing. The method and process Godwin (who was medically trained) used to prevent bigoted thinking could have been explored and/or Godwin’s larger intentions of how this would affect society. In addition, although creepy, Godwin’s operating room was filled with hanging body parts and skin, but the creature was not intimidating.
In summary, the concept is different and has a Frankenstein feel to it. Relying on one of his successful creations, a former Sheriff, and an assistant named Don, he intends to salvage more body parts for his work. It is worth a watch.
The film is released this February 24th.
