With years of experience in music, radio airplay, touring the US, Canada, and Europe, and countless musical releases, Montreal-based and Ontario born Andrea Godin has taken the next step into producing her own music. Starting her label Scarlet Cartels, Andrea has assembled an exclusive powerhouse team including dance music and award-winning icon Starkillers, with whom she collaborates with on most of her songs.

Runnin can easily be mistaken for part of a contemporary score for a big-budget action flick due to the energy it exudes. It’s a short and unassuming track but, listening to it with volume, the orchestration results in powerfully resonant music with an all-encompassing ambiance brought together with synth bass notes, shimmering pads, and resonant strings.  The Canadian DJ considers this song to be most reflective of persona and remains excited to share it with everyone. We asked her a few questions about her career to date.

How did you get to become a DJ?

I have been doing music my whole life but I was always focused only on songwriting, singing, and performing. For the past few years, I have been expanding my skills into music production and DJing as well because I realized the importance of being able to finish projects from start to finish without having to rely on anyone. I have also been very inspired to dive more into the DJ side of things while working with my co-producer Starkillers who is very successful in house music. He has been teaching me many aspects of dance music that have helped empower me throughout my process.

How, why, and when did you decide to set up Scarlet Cartels?

Having my own label has been pretty surreal! I decided to set my label up because it allows me to have full control of my career rather than signing each of my releases to different labels and losing a percentage of each song to those labels. Scarlet Cartels focuses on gritty styles relevant to house, electronic, dark R&B, and techno. For now, the label is releasing projects by myself, Starkillers, and The Wulf, but eventually, I plan on launching other talents off my platform. Teaming up with a great distribution company in the UK has made the process much more straightforward.

What’s next? Do other projects in the making or following the release of this track?

Right now I have steady releases lined up until August. I’m gonna be releasing a couple of melodic techno records, 2 electronic/R&B songs that I will be rapping AND singing on for the first time, and my very first breaks song. I am very excited about this breaks record because I feel like I captured an extremely special feeling in the music which doesn’t always come easy. You have to capture it while it’s there or else you may never be able to capture it again.

Andrea also has her own monthly DJ mix show “Fresh & Wild” which includes the freshest house and techno records and is aired on several radio stations worldwide.  For further info, check out her social media links
