Donald Edwards has played across the globe with some of the finest musicians in jazz and other genres, building a reputation all his own. He has performed with jazz greats such as Freddie Hubbard, The Mingus Big Band, Joey Calderazzo, Dynasty & Orchestra, Mark Whitfield, Gregoire Marit, Donald Harrison, Kurt Elling, Branford Marsalis, and many more.
Since winning the Louisiana Arts Ambassador’s Award in 1994 for Music Composition, he has become one of the most sought-after drummers on the Baton Rouge/New Orleans music scene. Working across music genres, ranging from marching band, hip-hop, and pop to r&b, jazz, funk, and gospel, has simply fuelled his creative interpretation and virtuosity. As a result, Edwards is among the vanguard of players on the New York scene today.
As he continues to make recordings, we can hear the clarity of his development as a composer. The Color Of US Suite undoubtedly carries an array of expressions of the freedom concept, the obsession with hope through the infatuation of dreams – the disappointment, anger, and love for the framing of our evolving paradigm from within the prism of democracy. Donald captures those gradations of condition in a high-minded representation of passion, delivered with high-skilled precision, and soulful highs that are as exciting to the gutbucket enthusiast as it is intriguing for the high-brow aficionado. The Color Of US Suite signifies the idealism of being in pursuit, eye on the prize, and evince a passion for study, discipline, and integrity required to handle this music’s greatest demands. Donald Edwards, with fellow musicians Anthony Wonsey (piano), Ben Wolfe (Bass), David Gilmore (guitar), and Abraham Burton (Tenor Saxophone) has succeeded in delivering a noteworthy composition that any music enthusiast can add to their collection, and we are most certainly edified by them doing so.
The Color Of US Suite is available from today.
