Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired Lennert Hillege and Guido van Driel’s acclaimed Dutch action-drama Bloody Marie for US theatrical and on-demand release from November 1st. It was one of nine films selected to be the Dutch entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Oscars.

The film’s protagonist is Marie, adeptly played by German actress Susanne Wolff. Marie a successful graphic novelist turned alcoholic. Living in Amsterdam’s red-light district with her faithful dog, she drinks too much and gets into one conflict after another. An abhorrent incident in the neighboring house forces her to take action and take control of her life.

The direction and cinematography help create intimacy and connection with the characters whilst providing the viewer with a subtle teaser of the canals, interesting architecture, coffee shops and red-light district the city is universally known for. The film is a slow burner but the performances, headed by Wolff’s proficient display, feed your attention and desire to see how the story unfolds.  With a running time of only 87 minutes, Bloody Marie rises to become something highly entertaining and surprisingly exciting.  Without, giving too much away however, you may be thrown by its ending. This for me is its flaw.
