Lionsgate presents, an Anacapa Pictures and CR8IV DNA production, directed and co-written by Emerson Moore. The story anchors on six strangers, stripped of their possessions, finding themselves in a remote, endless cornfield. They are left with only six items: a gun with a single bullet, matches, a lantern, a knife, a compass, and a flask of water. As mysterious sirens blare in the distance and traps appear at every turn, the group is plunged into a cat-and-mouse game with an unseen evil, and survival depends upon solving a diabolical and deadly puzzle.
Admittedly, I was immediately attracted to this storyline, reminiscent of Nimród Antal’s Predators (2010) with touches of the John Boorman classic Deliverance, and James Cameron’s sublime Aliens. The film is executed with competent performances from the cast, including Jordan Claire Robbins and Theo Rossi.
It captures your attention and intrigue but, unlike the films mentioned, the absence of character development wanes your interest in whether or not the strangers survive the life-threatening torment. One key to being drawn to a film is finding yourself emotionally attached to the characters. Unfortunately, this was a flaw in the film’s delivery, further undermined by a few unexplained scenes leading to the finale. Overall, ‘Escape The Field’ is a watchable movie. It has an imaginative plot that is proficiently executed and will keep fans of the action/horror genre entertained.
The film is in selected US theaters, On Digital, and On-Demand from May 6, 2022
