In Conversation – Alicia Henry, Gaëtane Verna & Dr Christine Checinska
Tiwani Contemporary
To mark the occasion of Alicia Henry’s first UK solo exhibition To Whom It May Concern currently on view at Tiwani Contemporary, the gallery hosts a conversation between the American artist and Gaëtane Verna, Director and Artistic Director of The Power Plant, Toronto in Canada along with Dr. Christine Checinska, Curator of African and African Diaspora Fashion at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, UK.
During the past twenty years, the Nashville-based Alicia Henry has created work that departs from Western ideas of portraiture in its focus on a likeness or construction of a subject. Her figurative, mixed-media sculptural work foregrounds the human figure in isolation and interaction and in turn is conceived of by the artist as belonging to both a single and communal body. To that end, her evocative, spectral work explores metaphorical and formal connections between visibility and identity.
