Talk by Levi Strauss, Author of Photography and Belief
The Photographers Gallery
This online talk examines belief in the image in the image. In his new book Photography and Belief, Levi Strauss writes: “Visual images become more like testimony than like perception… Belief in images has become the test case for the social. If we do not find a way to believe what we see in images, we lose the ability to act socially.”
Focusing on the thoughts of John Berger, Walter Benjamin, and Roland Barthes, Levi Strauss together will reflect on the pre-photographic past and to contemporary moments to consider the influence of the camera on public opinion. How and why do we believe in the photographic image in the way we do?
The event is at 14.00 EST / 19.00 London GMT (on Zoom)
