We had the pleasure of speaking with AMERY about his latest song “California Love.” Check it out below.
Hi, AMERY! Thank you for granting the interview. We’re excited to speak with you. You recently produced a music video called “California Love.” Tell us what inspired the song?
Thank you! I get inspired by simple things sometimes. In this case, I was just jamming with my producer James Lowland and he started playing this little melody on the piano and the first words that came to mind were California Love. When I listened to the melody, I could just picture myself somewhere in California, having the best time of my life.
Are the lyrics based on a personal experience?
It’s about a relationship I’ve been in that didn’t really last for long. The lyrics have this nostalgic feeling, reminiscing of the honeymoon phase when you’re daydreaming of that California Love which is “endless love” to me.
Why did you choose the title “California Love?”
I chose California Love because I associate this sunny state with this typical vibe and energy that you can find in my song. The title just came very naturally as I explained earlier and I feel like the track also have a very summery feeling to it: it’s perfect for a holiday or a road trip!
How long did production take?
It was a long process. James Lowland and I started with the melody and a little jam to get some ideas flowing. It sounded really nice. But after that, we gave it rest. The next time we listened to it, we knew where we wanted to go with the idea. We went for electronic pop with heavy sounds. It was risky because it sounded totally different from my previous work but we went for it. It took us a long time to get it right but it was worth it.
What genre of music do you consider your music to be? Who are your major influences in the industry?
I consider my music to be pop/r&b with some funkiness in the mix. I grew up with the music of Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. They are my daily inspirations. I try to follow in their footsteps.
What was your favorite part of the lyrics?
My favorite part is when I say “We were sitting in the back of a car, thinking it would take us far”. For me, that really embodies the meaning of the whole song. It’s basically saying that we’re young, having fun, dreaming of a happy ending but in reality, we don’t really know how this journey will end.
Tell us about your rehearsals. What are they generally like?
Rehearsing is one of the things I like the most when it comes to work ‘cause I’m with my band. I have the most amazing musicians and it’s always fun to work with them. We’re always trying to do new things for the next performance. Even though we have a short amount of time to improve and adjust, the show we’re creating is getting bigger and bigger every single time!
What has been your favorite experience in making the song?
The whole thing was a new experience for me. The fact that I got to do something totally different was very nice. I’m glad I got to explore a different style. The amount of freedom I had while recording was everything!
When looking back on the production, what resonated with you the most and why?
The electronic vibe in the production: it really allowed me to play more with my vocals and to play around and use my voice differently.
In your opinion, how could music make an impact on the world?
Music is a force of nature and it will always travel the world. As an artist, music is the way I express myself and it’s crazy to think that my songs can have an impact on different people around the world, lifting their mood up or helping them realize that they’re not alone, that other people are going through the same things.
If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose to make this song? Would you do anything differently?
I’m never 100% satisfied with what I do. I constantly feel like I can do more but that will be endless work. So, sure, if I could work on it again, there might be little changes here and there but in the end, the most important to me is the message.
