We had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Luciana Marie about her career and upcoming projects. Check out the interview below.
Hi, Luciana! Thank you for granting the interview. Your music is amazing and we’re excited to speak with you about. What can you tell listeners about what’s coming up in 2019?
Thank you so much, I appreciate the compliment! 2019 is going to be one of the most exciting and fruitful years for me yet. I have been working on my new projects and material with an absolute dream team, and it is really helping me take my music to the next level!
Tell us what inspired your newest single.
My latest released single, Whole Crew, was inspired by different influences and events that occurred at the time. I always wanted to write a song that others could relate to when people put you down. I was in my home studio and I was just working with different samples and after a while, the music was really easy to translate the feeling of being upset about people talking negatively. My inspiration with this song was to give push back and to stand my ground. I also learned the value in not taking myself so seriously and getting caught up in those situations.
You had a headliner spot on the main stage of the 2018 Portland LGBTQ Pride Festival. Tell us about the awesome experience.
Yes, this was by far one of my favorite performances this year! Although, to my surprise, The Wizard of Oz decided to show up for the concert too! The weather was absolutely crazy and actually blew the back of the stage off. Besides the weather, the show was electric and I was so grateful for the opportunity! I was the youngest performer there amongst other performers/artist that was flown in from New York. I really pushed myself and my live performance team hard to make that performance perfect. We started creating and rehearsing the show two months before since I knew I had to show up with a spectacular show, since…well I mean its PRIDE…DUH!? I seriously love PRIDE so much, it always been the family that has shown me love and truly was there since day one.
Tell us about your songwriting process. How do you choose a topic to sing about?
Well, I think other artist and songwriters can agree that there is no one way that an idea or song comes about. I am very connected to music and rhythm and how the actual beat speaks to me. Often I produce and create the music or a sample, then I write the lyrics and really just let the music speak to me. Although sometimes I’ll just be getting ready for bed and then a hook idea comes to me!
What has been your biggest challenge as a singer?
There are so many things as an artist that is challenging, I think the three top things that have been my struggles are tonsils, in-ear monitors, and being a perfectionist. Last year I was diagnosed with 10 cases of strep throat and was consistently on steroids and a plethora of antibiotics. It was a serious nightmare. In-ear monitors (IEM) and I have a love-hate relationship…enough said. Being a perfectionist I have tunnel vision with my work. I do this with all my projects. Now, it may not seem like a bad thing to be a perfectionist because it causes you to perfect your craft. Although it sometimes gets the best of me and eats me alive so I have to find a balance of when to stop and let the imperfections of the masterpiece be.
What’s the ultimate direction of your music?
My music really follows along the path of a four-letter word called love. J As stereotypical as it is to say, I truly do feel and believe that the world simply needs more of people giving appreciation to one another. Especially with how much hate, emptiness, and separation there is right now in the world. Ariana Grande has her song “No Tears Left To Cry” which really talks about how there are so many bad things going on that we all have gotten to a point where we ask “When is it ever going to stop…?” her song is that statement for all of us. I want my music to have that shape and presence as I grow as an artist. Music is a way for us all to escape and connect in every way, whether that be from work, a bad day, or just simply fantasies about a love affair. It’s such an amazing outlet.

What are your musical icons/influences?
I have so many musical influences in every aspect of my career that I look up to. As far as singers/performers definitely Bebe Rexha, Camila Cabello, Anna Marie, Ariana Grande, Halsey…and that’s just right now. I really particularly look up to them because of their work ethics and their abilities just are stratospheric. They are some of the trendsetters of the industry. Their sounds, performances, and music videos also really inspire me and naturally influence my work.
When looking back on the production of your music, what resonated with you the most and why?
The thing that resonated the deepest with me when I first started was advice given to me about producing my own beats and music. It was mentioned to me early on by one of my really great mentors in my career, that “If you empower yourself, and learn how to produce your own music, write the lyrics, and sing… you will be unstoppable”. To hear this when I was 14 it gave me the powerful realization that I really would be unstoppable especially as a young female artist. Sometimes, my family and I will take Sunday afternoons and listen to the old music I made and it is inspiring to hear what my music was then and to hear what I am creating today. I have always kept that piece of advice in my back pocket. Once you empower yourself, especially if you are a young woman, no one can take that away from you. You become a force to be reckoned with.
In your opinion, how could a singer make an impact on the world?
Yes, very much so. I truly believe all artist and entertainers are the influencers of the world. Between social media and how we consume media in today’s day and age, anyone can truly make a huge impact. A great example is Taylor Swift and telling her fans to go vote during this past election. She was able to motivate her fans to take action and go vote. Which is mind-blowing if you really think about it. We aren’t just talking about singers and performers anymore in today’s industry. We’re talking about influencers that have a presence and the ability to create a large impact on the world.
If you had to do it all over again, would you still choose this career? Would you do anything differently?
I would most definitely still choose music. Although, if I couldn’t sing for the life of me I would so go become an interior decorator. I learn something new every day and my industry is always changing that I have to consistently stay on my feet. I have learned more about being in the music business than I ever did in school and more interesting things at that. I have been able to trial and error and really apply things such as, what happens when someone takes your beat and claims it as their own? How does that look with a lawyer? And more importantly, how do you successfully have a costume change in 90 secs!? I started being introduced to these things when I was 14. I’m now 20 years old and I still am learning new things every single day. It’s simply addictive. (P.S. I’m still working on the costume changes).
