The message of Cooper Phillip’s single ‘Thank You Heartbreak’ is clear – be grateful for the hardest times in your life, because they only make you stronger. Her music, which conveys strength, grace, and empowerment, reflects characteristics of overcoming obstacles and achieving milestones. This perhaps justifies her successes to date; her previous single has harvested over 10 million listens online and aided the growth of a loyal fan base, particularly on Instagram. Alexey Figurov’s directed video provides a rich cinematic feel that compliments an uplifting memorable track.
Born in a small town in Russia to a family of accomplished classical musicians, Cooper’s early years saw her raised by her grandmother and aunt while her mother, a master violin player, toured around the world with various symphonies. This separation led Phillip to take comfort in music, becoming enamored by the vocals of Ella Fitzgerald. She taught herself Fitzgerald’s songs inside and out, noticing every nuance of phrasing and jazz intonations. Enrolling at the prestigious Moscow State Classical Academy, she studied classical piano, music theory, harp, jazz, blues, ballet, and voice. This songstress worked diligently to expand her vocal range and control, taking everything that came in her path and feeding off every challenge.
Recognizing her daughter’s talent and charisma, Phillip’s mother gave up her flourishing career to accompany a young Cooper on tour throughout Russia. Determined to pursue an international career in music, Cooper Phillip moved to New York City at the age of 17. With barely a dollar to her name, she worked and hustled, performing at weddings and clubs and sleeping in the storeroom of a restaurant where she performed. She faced difficulties but she would not be deterred. After a few years in the city, Phillip jumped at an opportunity to sing at an important gig in Los Angeles and she never went back. An inspiring story and encouragement for all of us to thank our ‘heartbreaks’ as we pursue our dreams.
