Emanating from the low hills of western Kentucky are the unmistakable songs of Melanie A. Davis. Her music blends jazz-inspired vocals and harmonic arrangements with acoustic fingerstyle guitar informed by the Appalachian folk tradition, creating a distinct sound that is at once familiar and unique, poignant and liberating, brutally honest but wistfully hopeful.

A thespian at heart, her stage experience translates into a captivating live performance that leaves the listener hanging onto each line.  Delivering thoughtful phrases that speak to common neuroses we all understand, she delivers a fresh wave of music that seems to emphasize the range and complexity of the emotions she artfully describes. Whether it’s contemplating the potential of her immediate community or considering her own vices and tendencies, Davis never shies away from the glaring truths therein. Her music is both a celebration and sensitive criticism of human nature and her lifelong Midsouth home. Davis has spent the last 12 of her 27 years performing across the country in various outfits, from Gregorian chant sextets to indie bossa rock bands and, of course, as a solo jazz-folk singer-songwriter.

Her upcoming album, Honey Locust, is a thirteen-track collection of jazz, folk, and doo-wop-inspired songs centered around the seedy truths that hide beneath familiar tropes of American existence: patriotism (or a lack thereof), senses of belonging and self, social responsibility, and love. The album features folk sensibilities (acoustic, fingerstyle guitar, and a heavy lyrical emphasis); jazz-inspired vocals and harmonic language; and glimpses into Davis’ personal relationship with music. Honey Locust, is released on August 4th, 2023
