Honor has been recognized at the Festigious International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Awards, and New York Film Awards. It tells the story of Serena (Simmie Sangian) a seventeen-year-old British-Indian girl who is in a relationship with a woman. She is forced into an arranged marriage by her parents. Once she finds a way to seek help, she finds herself stuck between honoring her parent’s wishes and staying true to herself.

Directed by Kankana Chakraborty and Morgan Aiken, the plot is both intriguing and potentially arresting. Obviously, it addresses the contentious subject of arranged marriages but also shines the spotlight on cultural norms, homosexuality, race relations and the public façade and reputation of the family.  With such material, I was disappointed to find the film was far too short and doesn’t develop beyond what essentially is a film trailer or teaser, encouraging you to think further about the main subject matter.

That said, it still succinctly addresses the underpinning theme, the ever important issues of individual rights and liberties that aren’t afforded to thousands of minors and young women. The film recognizes that 39,000 girls around the world are forced into marriage each day and, if trends continue, an astonishing 150 million girls will be married before their 18th birthday over the next ten years.

In summary, whilst I would have expected more of a film and storyline, I hope the recognition Honor receives does impact positively, influencing what can be done to bring forced marriages to an end.
