Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a historical period drama and romantic comedy film directed by Bharat Nalluri and written By David Magee and Simon Beaufoy. The film was released in 2008. Frances McDormand as Guinevere Pettigrew and Amy Adams as Delysia Lafosse leads the cast. Lee Pace as Michael Pardue, Tom Payne as Phil Goldman, Mark Strong as Nick Calderelli, Shirley Henderson as Edythe Dubarry, Ciarán Hinds as Joe Blomfield, Christina Cole as Charlotte Warren, Stephanie Cole as Miss Holt are solid and supportive.
The film is set in 1939 London and is about a middle-aged, prudish vicar’s daughter and her governess, Guinevere Pettigrew, who has been fired from her fourth job. Pettigrew takes another person’s assignment to avoid unemployment but ends up being entangled with a rambunctious American singer and actress, Delysia Lafosse. Lafosse prefers Miss Pettigrew be her social secretary instead of governing her ostentatious lifestyle.
Delysia Lafosse’s three suitors are often tedious for Pettigrew to handle but she grows fond of the penniless and devoted pianist, Michael Pardue (Lee Pace), The wealthy and controlling nightclub owner Nick Calderelli is more than she can tolerate, while the young theatre producer, Phil Goldman, is nothing but a child to her. Pettigrew aids Lafosse in keeping her liaisons separate by dealing with the frequent mishaps, like pretending she smokes when Calderelli questions Lafosse about who has been in her flat.
Everyone was stunning in the film. Amy Addams and Frances McDormand’s are astounding. Michael Pardue’s role was captured quite nicely by Lee Pace. The chemistry between Michael and Delysia was very special and endearing. Michael was charismatic and talented. His genuine love and affection towards Delysia Lafosse made the romance bittersweet.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is a well-acted, old-fashioned comedy, with clever dialogues and wit. Although there are dramatic scenes, it doesn’t overshadow the comedic aspects of the film. The film is based on a fictional novel by Winifred Watson. The tone of the novel in comparison to the film is apparent by the director’s choices. It’s evident he focused on the era the story took place – on the eve of World War II.
The film has an emotional depth and creates a sense of morality that are the driving characteristics of the novel and film. The cinematography and camera angles were very good. The music and tone were magnificent. Its extravagant lifestyle of the social elite was exceptionally highlighted. Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day earned $16.72 million USD dollars worldwide. The movie is very fun to watch and is quite unique.
