Lincoln is a film about one of the greatest leaders in the world. The film released in 2012 to critical acclaim. It gives a different perspective on the American Civil War.  We see President Abraham Lincoln’s turbulent final months in office and his struggles with the continuing violence on the battlefield. He also faced stern opposition from his cabinet to end slavery.

Lincoln is directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner. Lincoln seeks peace no matter what the cost. The role of Abraham Lincoln was played by Daniel Day-Lewis. Daniel Day-Lewis gave an amazing performance which really portrayed Abraham Lincoln well. The supporting cast is superb. Sally Field played Mary Todd Lincoln, Joseph Gordon Levitt played Robert Lincoln, Lee Pace played Fernando Wood, David Strathairn played William Seward, James Spader played W.N Bilbo.

“Lincoln” – Lee Pace as Fernando Wood

The film has intense dramatic moments. The suspense created in the office was extraordinary. Lee Pace really captured the role of Fernando Wood. He expressed the views of the opposition. The scene where Fernando Wood speaks is exhilarating. It displayed the power of the opposition and what Lincoln had to face.

The cinematography and camera angles were exceptional. It successfully captured the civil war era. To date, Lincoln earned 275.3 million USD at the box office. The film was a hit with film critics and history enthusiasts. Lincoln won two Oscars. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in the Academy Awards (Oscars), Golden Globe Awards, and BAFTA Awards. Rick Carter and Jim Erickson won Best Achievement in Production Design in the Oscars.

Spielberg’s goal was to maintain historical accuracy for the film.  He wanted to show the sheer brutality of war and what it means to have a different opinion. The nation was embroiled in a massive war campaign and is the bloodiest conflict in history on American soil. Lincoln successfully shows President Abraham Lincoln’s passion for humanity, strength, and courage, to end the war and permanently abolish slavery through the 13th Amendment. His political prowess defined his legacy as a powerful leader that possessed great courage, political acumen, and a high moral standard.

The war scenes are intense scenes. The violence and carnage will stay with you for a while. I recommend seeing it before showing it to children under 13. The battles on the field and in the cabinet are extreme and thrilling. It captured the essence of the civil war through a perfect;y executed story by Tony Kushner
