The Timepiece Poster

The Timepiece is a short film presented by Sky High Films and was directed and produced by Karan Choudhary. The story was written by Karan Choudhary himself, along with Michael Anastasio. This short film is about 14 minutes long and has a meaningful storyline that is a perfect fit for this short amount of time. Like every top-level short film, this one also contains a few messages that need to be interpreted by the viewers.

The film starts with Sunny (played by Karan), who is an immigrant in the country, trying to earn a living by delivering Italian food to customers. He always tries to smile while he does his job, but the customers sometimes give him a hard time. He continues the deliveries to save for his tuition fees, and in the hope that someday he will become an actor. He meets a beautiful girl named Rachel at a park one day and starts talking with her, but doesn’t get her number. After she leaves, an old man sitting on a bench nearby starts talking to him. The old man, Larry, has been listening to their conversation all this time and invites Sunny to his house to see his film collection.

Sunny is not keen to go to a strangers’ house, but one day Larry orders food from the Italian restaurant where Sunny works. Sunny goes to deliver the food and finds that old man. The two men start talking, and Larry opens up about his late husband and the prestigious watch that he had. Larry wears it all the time in remembrance of his husband.

Larry and Sunny become good friends. Sunny borrows and watches Larry’s films, and Larry helps Sunny to improve his acting. Then one day, Larry loses his watch and thinks that maybe Sunny has stolen it. Larry’s friend also suggests that it could be Sunny, as he is an immigrant and should not be trusted. Larry confronts Sunny, and he is offended and decides to never speak with Larry again.

The short film shows that even in this modern age, many still have the belief that immigrants could be thieves, which is obviously incorrect. Larry realizes his mistakes later when he finds his watch in his apartment. He apologizes to Sunny at the end and everything becomes normal. In the final scenes, Sunny is seen taking Larry to meet with Rachel who he has started dating. The best part of this short film is that Karan is seen looking at the price of the watch on his phone at one point in the film, which causes viewers to suspect him as well. The key lesson for viewers is not to judge anyone too quickly.

This short film also encourages people to retain some of their accent. This is seen at the beginning of the film when Rachel and Sunny talk in the park. They both have an accent that reveals their origin when they talk. The film also portrays that, a person who has lost a loved one can get quite lonely at times. Larry is seen sitting at the park alone in two scenes.

Karan plays that part in the movie, and in the end, his struggles, which were shown at the beginning of the film, finally pay off.

The cast acted very well. Bill Bateman (Larry) and Becca Ballenger (Rachel) did a very good job. Karan’s (Sunny) acting seemed very natural and he was able to tell the story really well as the director of the short film. The film didn’t seem lengthy at any time and told the story with the hidden messages really well. The Director of photography, Jake DeNicola and Editor Alexander Spiess did an exceptional job in their respective roles.
