‘The Whistler’ is a horror short film released in 2018. It features two sisters, named Lindsey and Rebecca, who spend the night alone in their house after their parents go out for dinner. The film is based on the chilling story of The Whistler, the main antagonist from Rebecca’s horror book who comes back to life and attempts to haunt the under-aged children as part of his revenge.
In what seems to be a rare horrifying experience, director Stang does extremely well in terms of fitting all the contents of the film within the limited runtime. ‘The Whistler’ takes little time in introducing its main characters to the viewers: a grownup Lindsey who would rather go hang out with her friends than babysit the naïve, but confident little sister. After Rebecca displays an interest in horror stories, Lindsey reads her a book called The Whistler before telling a horror story of her own. Little does Lindsey know, the apparently dead Whistler comes back to life and begins to haunt the house, taking Rebecca with her.
One of the main qualities of this film is how unlike most horror sequences, it does not completely rely on computer graphics and jump scares. ‘The Whistler’ provides its viewers with a very coherent plot that automatically creates a sense of fear within the hearts and minds of all those watching. It sets up a dark and eventful environment which haunts its viewers without using any major jump scares techniques. Additionally, a significant amount of credit goes to the makeup team which does quite well in creating the character of The Whistler. Although we get to see very little of him, he still manages to pass down chills solely through his cunning smile.
In its true sense, ‘The Whistler’ is a well-defined film that is guaranteed to terrify all its viewers. It uses its short format to get to the point quickly without wasting time and making the viewers feel as if the storyline is being stretched. It managed to win 15 awards out of total nominations of 26.
