This October, The Haves and the Have Nots’ actress Danielle Deadwyler stars in The Devil to Pay, a new film from the writers of  ‘Becky’.  The film centers on Lemon (Deadwyler), a struggling farmer in an isolated Appalachian community. She needs to repay her husband’s debt to the oldest family on the mountain and their murderous biscuit-making matriarch, played by Catherine Dyer, to save her young son’s life. Armed with only her wits and tenacity, Lemon must unravel the mysteries her husband left behind or lose everything she’s ever loved.

The film, directed by Ruckus Skye and Lane Skye,  features a supporting cast of some familiar faces, including The Walking Dead’s Jayson Warner Smith and Ozark’s Adam Boyer, but this isn’t enough to inject life into an uneven storyline and production that lacks energy, pace, and an excitement. Unfortunately, there’s a lack of engagement and character development, which only leaves you intrigued enough to know if the plot will improve if you keep watching. Fortunately, despite the end being unclear, the film is watchable enough to see the outcome.

The Devil to Pay is in Drive-in theaters from October 2 and On-Demand and DVD release October 6 via Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures.

Movie Rating: 2 stars.
