Born and raised in Hull, East Yorkshire, and now based in London, CHARLS is a British singer-songwriter whose work is defined by captivating vocals and fearless emotional honesty. After an 18‑month absence, the artist formerly known as Charlotte Jane returns with “Heads Up,” a vulnerable new single that marks a bold new chapter — and is available now on all major streaming platforms.
.
“Heads Up” is the first release under her new artist name, and her first new music since May 2023. It signals an evolution rather than a reinvention: CHARLS steps into the spotlight as an independent artist with a sound that is more ambitiously honest, emotionally intimate, and unfiltered than ever before. The single offers the first glimpse into a larger forthcoming project — a deeply personal body of work that traces heartbreak, healing, and self-discovery in real time.
Previously co-signed by heavyweights like Elton John and Lewis Capaldi, CHARLS is now carving out her own lane, on her own terms. Written with Phil Simmonds, “Heads Up” is a poignant warning about naive young love and the painful process of learning to let go of those who cause harm. Stripped back and spacious, the track leans into simplicity: a pure vocal performance, uncluttered production, and lyrics that cut straight to the bone.
.
“Every single lyric of this song is true,” CHARLS explains. “It felt like I was potentially being too specific at the time and that no one would ever be able to relate, but on reflection, I think that’s the magic of it. It’s understated, almost like a folk song, but it really stays with you. I don’t think it’s the ‘in your face’ song of the record, but it’s one that will grow organically — there’s just something about it.”
.
That “something” is exactly what makes this new era so compelling. With “Heads Up,” CHARLS doesn’t just reintroduce herself; she invites listeners into a more vulnerable, unguarded space — one where specificity becomes universal, and quiet songs linger the longest.
